Cultivating Non-Resistance: A Path to a More Easeful Life

Published on 20 April 2023 at 20:26

Resistance. We all know what it is. Or at least, what the effects of it are. When we encounter resistance, things don't go our way, we feel unhappy with how things are, and we struggle to accept life as it presents itself. Simply, when resistance is at play, we are not enjoying life to the fullest.

But life doesn't have to continue that way. Once we recognize that resistance is present, there are things we can do to facilitate its softening and return to a more natural and flowing state.

There are countless tools and techniques available to help us dissolve resistance. However, the specific approach we choose will depend on the source of our resistance. Here are some examples:

Firstly, take some time to tune into your body. Allow all of your senses to function effortlessly and acknowledge them one by one. Invite the topic of whatever it is that you are feeling resistant about to come into your awareness. Be curious and notice what is happening in your body. Is there tension in your shoulders? Tightness in your throat? Shallow or deep breaths? Simply notice and be willing to feel what that feels like.

Secondly, notice the thoughts in your mind and don't just take them as true. Question them. Is believing what the thoughts are saying serving you well? As Lao Tzu said, "Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny." This quote reminds us to be mindful of our thoughts and not to simply accept them as true or accurate. Instead, we should observe our thoughts and question them, recognizing that they can shape our words, actions, and ultimately, our destiny. By being aware of our thoughts, we can make more conscious choices and lead a more intentional life.

Thirdly, simply be present in this moment without trying to make life move in a certain way or dwelling on past experiences. Just be here and now, alive to all the senses of your body, and notice that effortlessly, all of this is given to us without doing anything for it.

Finally, cultivate gratitude wherever you can. Take the time to appreciate what you have, even the small things. By doing so, you shift your focus away from what you lack and towards what you have, which can help to dissolve feelings of resistance.

All these basic and simple steps help us to cultivate non-resistance. If our habit has been to fall into resistive patterns, then we may need to try to adopt a new way of being. But it's well worth the effort, as you'll find yourself experiencing all that comes your way in a much more easeful state.

In conclusion, resistance is a natural part of life, but it doesn't have to control us. By cultivating non-resistance, we can learn to navigate life's ups and downs with greater ease and grace. So, take the time to tune into your body, question your thoughts, be present in the moment, and cultivate gratitude. Doing so will help you to dissolve resistance and live a more joyful and fulfilling life.
